CLOR finds traces of previous radiation exposure
Devices producing ionizing radiation are used today in medicine, industry, agriculture, military and scientific research. Sometimes, however, human error or equipment failure may cause of accidental radiation exposure of a worker. Dr Maria Kowalska and MA Monika Szymanska from the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection in Warsaw (CLOR), are able to determine radiation dose absorbed few weeks earlier.

"Ventures" winner closer to developing an effective flu virus test
It is possible that soon, in order to find out whether we are being attacked by flu virus, or just minor cold, we will only have to do a 5-10 minute test? Dawid Nidzworski from the UG-GUMed Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology is close to developing a biosensor for this purpose. For its development the researcher received a grant under the "Ventures" programme of the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP).

Department of Molecular Virology (KWM), University of Gdansk Faculty of Biotechnology is working with European laboratories on a vaccine against the HCV virus causing hepatitis C, which leads to cirrhosis or liver cancer. A vaccine against HCV does not yet exist.

UJ scientists research whether Salmonella bacteria may help fight cancer
Researchers from the Jagiellonian University (UJ) are researching whether modified Salmonella bacteria would be helpful in treating cancer. It is already known that the bacteria are effective in combating cancerous cells in mice. The study was one of the projects awarded in this year's competition Polish Product of the Future.

As part of his doctoral thesis, Mateusz Moderhak from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, Gdańsk University of Technology, is developing a modern method of diagnosing breast cancer using thermal methods. Work continues on the Polish system of stroke treatment progress monitoring
Work continues on created in the Department of Microelectronics and Computer Science of Łódź University of Technology system for monitoring the progress of treatment of strokes on the basis of speech analysis, which was awarded the Grand Prix at the 58th International Trade Fair & Exhibition Brussels Innova 2009. The solution has a chance for implementation in Polish hospitals.
