PARP: we spent 41 percent of EUR 390 million for e-services
Of EUR 390 million the EU has earmarked for financing e-services in 2007-2013, approximately 41 percent has been spent - reported Violetta Pluta from the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP). "Measure 8.1 of the Innovative Economy Operational Programme (supporting e-services - PAP) enjoys a great interest. Not for a second did we fear that the budget would not be used. On the contrary, we were afraid that it would be consumed during the first two years. This, fortunately, did not happen" - she said.

Scientists from Łódź to take non-contact measurements of the Poles
Scientists from Łódź are planning to measure several thousand Poles and develop new tables for use in the clothing industry. Recently, such "measure taking" was held in the mid 1980s. Now, researchers will replace a tape measure with modern non-contact figure scanning device. "Such studies were last carried out in the 1980s, and since then we have somewhat changed - adults are heavier, and young people significantly taller and thinner" - explained the project leader, Dr Elżbieta Mielicka from the Textile Research Institute in Łódź.

Robert Barbucha is working on an innovative laser device
Circuit boards can be found in most electrical and electronic devices. Modern electronic components are getting smaller, so researchers are looking for methods that enable the best possible operation under the conditions of miniaturization. Robert Barbucha from the Centre for Plasma and Laser Engineering of Fluid-Flow Machinery Polish Academy of Sciences is working on an innovative laser device to be used in production of miniaturized circuit boards.

CLOR finds traces of previous radiation exposure
Devices producing ionizing radiation are used today in medicine, industry, agriculture, military and scientific research. Sometimes, however, human error or equipment failure may cause of accidental radiation exposure of a worker. Dr Maria Kowalska and MA Monika Szymanska from the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection in Warsaw (CLOR), are able to determine radiation dose absorbed few weeks earlier.

Polish scientists developed a method for removing nanopollutions
As a result of the development of nanotechnology, more and more nonoobjects enter the environment. Some of them are waste dangerous to humans, other substances are valuable for reuse. Scientists from the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS found a method that would allow to remove nanopollutions from wastewater easily and cheap.

Thousands of experiments a day in credit card-sized device
Tens of thousands of chemical and biochemical experiments may be conducted daily with the use of a microflow system. The device with the size of a credit card has been developed by a team of researchers at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IChF) led by Dr Piotr Garstecki. The device has already been tested in research on the effectiveness of antibiotic mixtures.

Students are working on a modern brain-computer interface
Three students of neurocognitivistics at the Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SWPS) are improving the operation of brain-computer interface - the latest technology for direct human communication with external devices without muscle involvement. For their research they recently received a grant under the "Ventures" programme of the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP).

World's most accurate clock to be built in Gdańsk
One of the most accurate clocks in the world will be built next year in Gdansk. The clock mechanism will operate based on impulses sent by pulsars - neutron stars, which radiate with exceptional regularity. Construction works are to start on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Gdańsk astronomer Johannes Hevelius. The initiators are the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone (PSSE) and Gdańsk Science and Technology Park (GPN-T).

Dr Jaromir Przybyło on Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality is a combination of reality and the virtual world, in other words, reality enriched with additional items generated by the computer. Augmented Reality is becoming increasingly popular in computer games, entertainment and advertising. Dr Jaromir Przybyło Work on its applications are conducted throughout the world, also in Poland, which tells the PAP Dr. Jaromir came from the Biocybernetics Laboratory of Department of Automatics, AGH University of Technology.
