Poles neglect but spoil their children

Seventy-two percent of Poles in a CBOS survey said Polish parents spent too little time with their children, 67 percent claimed parents spoilt their children to compensate them for the fact.

44 percent said corporal punishment was applied too rarely towards children.

81 percent of polled parents said they talked with their children about their problems daily or several times a week, 14 percent on Sundays and holidays. 4 percent said they hardly had time to talk with their children.

36 percent said they helped their children with schoolwork every day, 19 percent several times weekly, 13 percent on Sundays and holidays. 27 percent said they hardly ever helped their children with schoolwork.

35 percent declared they played with their children daily, 28 percent several times weekly, 24 percent on Sundays and holidays. 11 percent claimed to have no time to play with their children.

Asked about desired character features in children, 64 named morale, 59 independence of opinion, 58 percent the ability to pursue personal goals, 56 percent initiative and enterprise, 54 percent ambitiousness, 53 percent personal contentment, 47 percent helpfulness, 46 percent team spirit, 44 percent patriotism, 38 percent civic virtues, 38 percent readiness to take risks, 37 percent the ability to make money.

CBOS ran the poll on August 6-12 on a random sample of 1,041 adult Poles. MB
