70th anniversary of Polish Underground State honoured

Wreath laying ceremony, a roll call of the dead and an honorary salute honoured the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Polish Underground State and the Home Army AK (during WW2) in Warsaw on Sunday.

In a letter sent participants in the ceremony President Lech Kaczynski said that owing to the imagination of law-makers of the 2nd Republic of Poland (1918-1939) the defeat of the 1939 defence campaign was not tantamount to a break in the continuation of power. "Under the Nazi occupation the underground state tried to fulfil normal tasks of a state of the time of peace. Defying raging terror and huge losses the nation ended WW2 with its identity intact in order to build a new state."

In the president's opinion despite the fact that the Polish Underground State was a clandestine state Poles fully identified themselves with it and were unified in joint resistance against occupants and in the desire to regain independence. "The Polish Underground State is a beautiful heritage to which all Poles are entitled," President Lech Kaczynski wrote. KM
